Today we are traveling the Moselle River to Cochem. Cochem
is a very small village of 6,000 people. We have docked across the river from
the town and needed to take a bridge to the town. In the Old Quarter of the town
is the market square with old timber framed houses that overlook Martin’s Fountain
and the bay windowed baroque Town Hall. In the center is the 15th century
St. Martin’s Church and the Capuchin monastery, which now serves as an artistic
and cultural center.
Our tour today was of the town and of a castle that sits
above the city. We did the city tour, but did not take the tour of the castle.
The castle is called the Reichsburg Castle and is 1,000 years old. It was
conquered by Louis IV in the Nine Year’s War then later purchased and restored
by a Berlin business man.
These first pictures are to try and give you some
perspective in how close we are to some of these bridges that we go under, as
well as how close we come to the sides of the rivers.
These pictures are of some of the sights that we see as we
cruised the Moselle River this morning. You go by little villages, many
vineyard and many RV parks. The Germans do a lot of camping along the river for
their vacations.
Here are a lot of the pictures that we took in the town. In
one you will see the old gate in the wall, which was part of the original
walled city. In another I have the front of a house and you can see that the
house dates back to the 1300’s. There is also those beer glasses from our taste
of Germany before we got back on the ship. It was a cute café, on the water,
where you sit outside in the sunshine. There is also picture of the castle we
did not tour.
Lastly a good bye in German, an apartment building and the
front of our ship.
Tomorrow morning we will be in Bernkastel, Germany on our
way to Trier.
