Nestled on the Moselle River, Bernkastel, the ‘Pearl of the
Moselle’, has medieval squares laden with charming half timbered houses and inviting
lands and alleys. For much of their history. Bernkastel and its sister town of
Kues across the river stood worlds apart. A bridge united them in 1874, paving
the way for actual unification in 1905.
The ship only had one optional tour to do wine tasting, but
we had opted out. The night before they announced that the chef would take 30
people on a tour of some of the food places in Bernkastel and we were the second
ones to sign up.
We visited three places. The first was a meat market. Here
we tasted some of the smoked meat that they offered. Here are a couple of
pictures of the market.
Our next stop was a pastry shop where we tasted three
different pastries.
The final stop was a candy shop. Everything looked great and
we did buy a couple of things.
Hopefully they make it home.
After our short tour we did our own exploring of this great little
town. Here are some of the pictures.
We are now getting back on to the ship to have lunch as we
sail down the Moselle to Trier. We will be let off in Wintrich, Germany where
we will get on a bus to Trier, where we will have a tour and then join our boat
there.
